Caravaca

Caravaca de la Cruz is the head of the large Northwest Region of Murcia and the city of reference for other towns of the neighbour provinces of Granada, Jaén and Albacete. The title of city was given by the Queen Elisabeth II in 1849, and it is one of the cities with the longest history and tradition of the Region of Murcia.

Caravaca de la Cruz has 26.280 residents and it is a hospitable and an open city.

The people of this place are lovers of their land and traditions, which are offered kindly and warmly to the tourist.

It is located in the Northwest of the Region of Murcia, in the Spanish Southwest (38° 06° N1° 52¢O), it has an average altitude of 625 m. above sea level. The city has an extension of 859,51 km2, distributed in 14 districts: Archivel, Barranda, Benablón, Caneja, El hornico, El Moral-Entredicho, El Moralejo-La Junquera, La Almudema, La Encarnación, Los Prados, Los Royos, Navares, Pinilla y Singla.

It has a Mediterranean climate mixed with a continental climate too. The spring is normally rainy and with mild temperatures, especially in the middle of the season. The summer is dry with medium-high temperatures, particularly in July. The autumn appears rainy and with mild temperatures in the middle of the day, but cold nights from November. The winter comes with snow, mainly in the highest districts, with temperatures under 0°.

Along the municipal area of Caravaca de la Cruz, we can find a rugged terrain mixed with an abundant and varied representation of the Northwest fauna and flora. In fact, there are several protected areas. The highest mountainous nucleuses are found from the North to the West of the area: Sierra de Mojantes (1.605 m) y Sierra del Gavilán (1.477 m). Besides, it is rich in agricultural and livestock resources, something that made Caravaca becoming a place of settlement of different towns.

The city is located between the rivers Argos and Quípar, from West to East and it also has numerous natural water sources: Las Fuentes del Marqués, La Muralla or Las Tosquillas.
